School music classes are special.
It’s hard to imagine a more potent formula for shaping identity or building community than the hours our students spend playing the fight song in the stands or rehearsing for the upcoming concert. By the time a student walks in the front door for the first rehearsal, however, so many decisions have already been made: the music has been written, the venue has been booked, the performers have all been selected, and the concert has been
publicized. In the classroom, we focus on only one aspect of music: rehearsing. The result is gratifying, but we know the students are thinking about so much more: Can I make a career out of music? Is music useful or important? Does anyone but my parents care about what we’re doing here?
This year (2016), we’ve broken down the fourth wall in order to show Camas High School choir students what music means to their community and the broader economy. Young Audiences has sponsored classroom visits by various professionals: a talent buyer, a journalist, a publicist, a record label executive, a tour manager, recording engineers, and a
composer, amongst others. Students get to see not only how music is made but how it's possible to make a living in the world of music. They’ve been involved in planning this performance tonight, by writing a press release, picking our opening acts, selecting a poster design, and learning about live sound engineering. We’ve even taken this show on tour, to see what life as a touring musician is like).
Our hope is not necessarily that our students end up as professional musicians, or even employees of the music industry (though we wouldn’t mind!). Instead, we hope that they see how music can continue to create community even after the stadium lights fade at graduation.
Tonight, we’re creating something special – music that brings people together, whether we live in the city or the suburbs, whether we’re still in school or beyond.
Thank you for being a part of the lesson.
